A career transition, at any age, is often a shifting of many areas of your life to a new set of circumstances and priorities. You may be moving into a new job with more responsibility within the same field or moving into a different field with a similar level of responsibilities.
In any case, you need to draw upon a number of resources in order to successfully adjust to this transition. There is a resource-based theory which says that you must have key resources built up so that you can draw upon them while you are going through a transition. If your resources are lacking, your well-being and adjustment during a time of transition maybe at a lower level than they should be.
An example might be when a leader is promoted to a higher level of responsibility. During the transition, time spent with family and friends may slip. Time spent during weekends to be spiritually in tune with core beliefs and values may also suffer.
Over time, this depletion of resources can play havoc during a transition period of increased challenges and stress. Having a few trusted colleagues to talk with about a new situation can help you feel less isolated in a new role. Your physical “bank account” should also be built up in order to adjust to the increased “withdrawals” caused by a career transition. Physical stamina and good eating habits are key to weathering increased stress from longer work hours, for example, during a career transition.
